If GB WhatsApp has stopped working, start with the basics: restart the phone, check your connection, make sure you have free storage and confirm you are on a current build. Those four steps resolve most crashes, stuck screens and delayed messages.

A smaller group of problems is different. If you see a message telling you to use the official WhatsApp, that is not a glitch you can tweak away. The sections below separate fixable issues from account-level ones, so you know when to keep troubleshooting and when to stop.

The app won't open or keeps crashing

  1. Force-stop the app from Settings > Apps, then open it again.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Check free storage. A nearly full phone is a classic cause of crashes; keep at least a gigabyte spare.
  4. Clear the app's cache from Settings > Apps > Storage. Do not choose "Clear data" unless you hold a backup, as that can remove your chats.
  5. Check for an Android system update, since a pending one can cause odd behavior.
  6. As a last step, reinstall the app, but only after you have copied a backup off the phone.

If the crash began right after changing a theme or font, revert that change or reinstall. Heavy custom themes are a frequent trigger. The release you have may also simply be old: the newest build listed here is 18.60, released September 30, 2026, and requires Android 6.0 or higher. Compare against your own on the versions page, and see how to update for the safe way to move forward.

Can't verify your number

Verification problems usually come from the phone, not the app. Check that the number is entered with the correct country code, that the SIM can receive SMS or calls, and that you are not on a weak or restricted network. Wait for the countdown to finish before asking for a call instead of an SMS.

  • Turn airplane mode on and off, then try again.
  • Move to Wi-Fi if mobile data is unstable, or the other way around.
  • Do not request codes repeatedly; too many attempts can lock you out for a while.
  • Make sure the date and time are set automatically.

If you are doing this during a restore, remember the number has to match the one used for the backup. See restoring chats.

"You need the official WhatsApp" and restricted accounts

This message needs plain talk. GB WhatsApp is an unofficial, third-party client, and WhatsApp's terms do not permit unofficial clients. WhatsApp has stated that accounts using them may be temporarily or permanently restricted. A message telling you to switch to the official app, or a notice that your account is temporarily banned, means WhatsApp has detected the unofficial client and is acting on it.

What you can and cannot do

  • Reinstalling or updating the unofficial app will not remove a restriction imposed on your number.
  • A temporary restriction may lift after a wait, and the notice usually shows a countdown. Using the unofficial client during that period can extend the problem.
  • To get your chats back, you can try the official WhatsApp from Google Play once the restriction ends. Compatibility with your backup is not guaranteed.
  • If WhatsApp offers a way to request a review, use the official channels. The WhatsApp Help Center (opens in a new tab) is the source for that, not third-party sites.

Notifications late or missing

Delayed notifications are the most common complaint, and they are usually caused by the phone's battery management rather than by the app. Phones try to stop background apps to save power, and that can mean messages only arrive when you open the app.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > the app > Notifications, and make sure notifications and the relevant channels are on.
  2. In the same app page, open Battery and change the setting to unrestricted or not optimized. The wording varies by manufacturer.
  3. Check that Do Not Disturb or any focus mode is not silencing the app.
  4. Inside the app, review the notification and sound options, as some builds have their own.
  5. Some manufacturers add extra "auto-start" or "background activity" lists. Allow the app there if present.

Allowing background activity uses somewhat more battery, which is the trade-off. If you have both the official and unofficial apps installed, check each has its own notification settings. The Android Help pages cover notification and battery options for most phones.

Connectivity, storage and outdated builds

Messages stuck on the clock icon

Open a browser and confirm the internet works. Toggle between Wi-Fi and mobile data, check that data saver or a VPN is not blocking the app, and disable restricted background data for the app in its settings. Messages that stay pending usually mean no connection, not a broken app.

Storage and old releases

Low storage can stop media from downloading and make chats freeze. Old builds can also stop connecting once the servers change. Download a current release only from a source you trust, check its size and version against the published details, and follow the installation guide if you need to install again. If the install itself fails, see installation failed.

Still no luck? Look through the FAQ, or send details through the contact page: the exact message, your Android version and the build you use.

Frequently asked questions

Why does GB WhatsApp say I need the official WhatsApp?

It usually means WhatsApp has detected an unofficial client on your number and is restricting it. Reinstalling the unofficial app will not undo that, so the practical options are to wait out any temporary restriction or move to the official app from Google Play.

Why do I only get messages when I open the app?

Battery optimization is the typical cause. Set the app's battery usage to unrestricted, allow background activity, and check that notifications and Do Not Disturb are configured correctly.

Will clearing data fix a crash?

It can, but it may also delete your chats if there is no backup. Clear the cache first, and only clear data after making a backup and copying it off the phone.

Is it safe to keep an old build that still works?

An old build may eventually stop connecting and will miss fixes. Keep a backup, and update only from a source you trust, following the update guide.

The app will not open or keeps crashing. What should I try?

Restart the phone, free some storage, clear the app cache and make sure you are on the newest listed build. Persistent crashes after an update often point to a bad download. See the troubleshooting guide.

I cannot verify my phone number.

Confirm the number and country code, check signal and that SMS or calls are not blocked, and wait before retrying. Too many attempts can trigger a temporary lock. If you see a message saying you need the official app, your account has been restricted and the official app is the only supported option.

Is GB WhatsApp an official WhatsApp app?

No. It is developed by independent third parties and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or supported by WhatsApp LLC or Meta Platforms, Inc. The official app is available from Google Play.

Can my account be restricted for using it?

WhatsApp's terms do not permit unofficial clients, and WhatsApp has said accounts using them may be temporarily or permanently restricted. Do not use a number you cannot afford to lose, and keep a backup of your chats.
