Executive Summary & Key Findings
Quick answers to first-time questions about GB WhatsApp: what it is, installing and updating, everyday use, and data and privacy, with links to guides.
This is a short digest for people meeting the app for the first time. It is an unofficial, third-party modified WhatsApp client for Android, not made, released or endorsed by WhatsApp LLC or Meta, and not available on Google Play. The answers below are grouped by stage, from deciding whether to try it through to looking after your data.
For the complete list of questions, see the main FAQ page. Where a topic needs more than a paragraph, you will find a link to a deeper guide.
Before you install
Is this the same as the WhatsApp I already know?
No. It looks similar because it is built on top of the same messaging foundation, but it is changed by third parties and has extra options. What the app is covers the background.
Will my account be at risk?
Possibly. WhatsApp's terms do not permit unofficial clients, and WhatsApp has said accounts using them may be temporarily or permanently restricted. Do not use a number you cannot afford to lose, and read the disclaimer.
Would the official app be a better choice?
For most people, yes. The official app from Google Play is the safest-supported option. The side-by-side comparison lays out the trade-offs.
Will it run on my phone?
The latest build lists Android 6.0 or higher as its requirement. Check your phone against the requirements before downloading. iPhones are not supported.
Installing and updating
Why do I need to change an Android permission?
Android blocks installs from outside the store unless you allow them for the specific app you opened the file with. Grant it temporarily and revoke it afterwards. The installation guide has the full walk-through.
How do I know I have the right file?
Compare the file size and version with the release data. The latest build is 18.60, dated September 30, 2026, at about 78 MB. A large mismatch is a reason to stop and not install.
How do updates work?
There is no store to update it automatically, so you replace the app with a newer file manually. Take a backup first. See how to update safely.
What if the install fails?
The usual causes are low storage, a mismatched existing app or an incomplete download. Installation failed goes through them in order.
Using the app day to day
Which extra features will I get?
It depends on the build and release. Typical extras include appearance options and extra privacy toggles, but nothing is guaranteed. Browse the features page or the explained guide.
Can I change how it looks?
Often yes, through theme, font and bubble settings where available. Read how to change themes for steps and cautions.
The app keeps closing. What can I do?
Free some storage, close other apps, remove heavy themes and restart the phone. The not working guide covers the rest.
Data and privacy
Are my chats protected the same way?
You cannot assume so. Unofficial builds are modified by third parties, so the same security, privacy or end-to-end encryption guarantees as the official app cannot be assumed. See privacy settings explained.
How should I protect my chats?
Turn on two-step verification, keep a recent backup and only install from sources you trust. The backup guide shows how.
Can I move my chats to another app?
Between official WhatsApp and a modified client, sometimes, using local backups and the same number. Other messengers do not convert. See moving chats between apps.
